Starter Valve Synchronization Quick Guide

This procedure begins on page 5-79 of the service manual.

Tools and Supplies

Tools

  • Quad vacuum gauge set (Carbtune or similar)
  • Tachometer able to read in 50 RPM or smaller increments
  • Open-end wrenches: 7 mm
  • Rubber caps to fit PAIR valve fittings (xyzzy mm OD)

Supplies

None needed.

Disassembly

Remove the air box (See AirBoxRemovalQuickGuide)

Disconnect the vacuum hose closest to each starter valve.

Disconnect PAIR hoses from both valve covers and seal the reed valve outlet with a cap.

Procedure

Connect the vacuum gauge set to the vacuum ports exposed during disassembly.

Connect the tachometer.

Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature (three bars).

Run the engine at above 2,000 RPM for five seconds to allow the ECM to detect the missing MAP sensor.

Adjust the starter valves on cylinders 2, 3 and 4 so their vacuum levels match cylinder 1, which is not adjustable. 7mm

Repeat the above step until all cylinders match.

Set the idle speed to 1000 RPM.

Stop the engine.

Check the ECM fault codes. The ECM should report code 2 (MAP sensor) and code 9 (IAT sensor). (See ECMQuickGuide)

Reset the fault codes in the ECM.
  • ALERT! This step must be completed after stopping the engine or it will not run afterward.

Reassembly

Reconnect the vacuum hoses closest to each starter valve.

Uncap the reed valve outlets and reconnect the PAIR hoses to both valve covers.

Install the air box. (See AirBoxRemovalQuickGuide)
