Counterbalancer Backlash Adjustment Quick Guide

The full procedure begins on page 12-5 of the service manual.

Tools and Supplies

Tools

  • Socket wrench
  • Long socket extension
  • Sockets: 10 mm
  • Large flat-bladed screwdriver

Supplies

None needed.

Disassembly

Remove the fairing. (See FairingRemovalQuickGuide.)
  • IDEA! It is only necessary to remove the left side for this service.

Procedure

Begin with the engine colder than 35°C (95°F).

Loosen the upper and lower shaft holder pinch bolts. 10mm Socket

Turn the upper balancer shaft counterclockwise until resistance is encountered. Screwdriver

Using the punch mark as a reference, back the upper balancer shaft off one graduation clockwise.

Turn the lower balancer shaft clockwise until resistance is encountered.

Using the punch mark as a reference, back the lower balancer shaft off one graduation counterclockwise.

Warm up the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes.

If gear noise is excessive or you feel like making a finer adjustment:

  • Turn the upper balancer shaft counterclockwise until a whining noise is heard.

  • Turn the upper balancer shaft clockwise until the whining stops.

  • Turn the lower balancer shaft clockwise until a whining noise is heard.

  • Turn the lower balancer shaft counterclockwise until the whining stops.

Tighten the upper and lower shaft holder pinch bolts. 10mm Socket
  • IDEA! "Snug" is fine.

Snap the throttle and verify that the whining noise does not occur.

Reassembly

Reinstall the fairing.
