ST Vehicle Identification Numbers

VIN Layout

VINs on STs are constructed according to ISO standards 3779 and 3780.

WMI VDS Check Digit VIS
JH2 SC511 8 3M100001

This information is found on page 8 of the PartsCatalog.

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

This three-digit code uniquely identifies the origin and manufacturer of the vehicle:

  • J identifies Asia
  • H2 identifies the Honda Japan's motorcycle division

Vehicle Description Section (VDS)

These characters form a WMI-specific model identifier. The following VDSes have been observed:

VDS Market Model Years
SC510 U.S. Standard 2004-2010 (2006 Unconfirmed)
SC511 U.S. Standard 2003
SC512 Canada Standard 2004
SC513 U.S. ABS 2004
SC514 U.S. ABS 2003, 2005-2010
SC517 U.S. Police 2009
SC51A Global ABS 2002, 2004, 2008
SC51B Global ABS 2003
SC51C Global Standard 2002-2003

  • In 2002, the ST was not marketed in North America.
  • In 2011, no STs were imported into the U.S.
  • The police model is believed to have been imported into the U.S. 2005-2007 and 2009.
  • Based on available information and the pattern observed on the ST1300 and ST1300A, it would appear that the VDS scheme for the ST and Pan did not become consistent until 2005. It might be reasonable to assume that the Pan European VDS changed in 2004 and remained SC51A on 2005 and later Pan European ABSes.

Check Digit

A verification value calculated based on the rest of the VIN's characters per ISO 3779.

Vehicle Identification Section (VIS)

Model Year

The first character indicates the model year in which the vehicle was produced per ISO 3779:

Year First Digit
2002 2
2003 3
2004 4
2005 5
2006 6
2007 7
2008 8
2009 9
2010 A

Plant Identification

The second character identifies which plant where the unit was produced:

Identifier Plant
M Hamamatsu, Japan
K Kumamoto, Japan

Based on information in the RearBrakeHoseRecall and Honda's press releases, production of ST1300s appears to have transitioned to Kumamoto during the 2008 model year between April 14 and October 21, 2008.

Sequence Number

The remainder of the VIS is used to identify each produced unit within a VDS, plant and model year. ISO 3779 states that the manufacturer may encode anything they wish into this data, although generally this is a simple serial number. The U.S. and Canada require the last five positions to be numeric.

On all STs observed to date, the first digit has corresponded to the year of production, starting with zero:

Year First Digit
2002 0
2003 1
2004 2
2005 3
2006 4
2007 5
2008 6
2009 7
2010 8

Production Numbers

Year Model Number Produced Source
2003 ST1300 1443 GroundCapRecall
2003 ST1300A 798 GroundCapRecall
2004 ST1300 1352 GroundCapRecall
2004 ST1300A 798 GroundCapRecall
2008 ST1300 501 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2008 ST1300A 155 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2009 ST1300 182 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2009 ST1300A 208 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2009 ST1300PA 683 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2010 ST1300 456 RearBrakeHoseRecall
2010 ST1300ABS 130 RearBrakeHoseRecall
Total Known Production 6706

One VIN from a 2008 Pan European ABS has been observed with a sequence number of 61xxxx, so it is possible that production of those models exceeded 10,000 that year.

The Department for Transport in the United Kingdom provides registration data that gives some hints about the number of units sold there:
