Rear Wheel Quick Guide

This procedure begins on page 16-6 of the service manual.

Tools and Supplies

Tools

  • Socket wrench
  • 5mm Hex wrench
  • 8mm Hex wrench
  • Sockets: 10mm, 12mm, 27mm or 1 1/16"
  • Wrenches: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
  • Torque wrench which can handle 51 and 80 ft-lb

Supplies

  • Hondalube Moly 60 Paste (P/N 08734-0001)
  • General-purpose grease
  • Rear Caliper Stopper Bolt (P/N 90158-MZ0-000, Optional)
  • Medium-duty thread lock (Loc-Tite Blue)

Disassembly

Place the motorcycle on the center stand and remove all extra rear loads (top box, panniers, etc.).

Remove rear fender flap. (5mm hex wrench)

Loosen two clamp bolts for right muffler. (12 mm socket)

Remove two mounting bolts for right muffler. (10mm socket/10mm wrench for front bolts, 12mm socket/12mm wrench for rear bolts)

Swing right muffler down and out of the way.

Loose and back out brake caliper stopper bolt as far as it will go. You probably will not be able to remove it.

Remove the rear axle nut and washer.

Remove the rear axle and washer.

Remove the brake caliper, secure it out of the way with a bungee cord, string, etc.

Move the wheel to the left to free it from the final drive gear case and remove the wheel.

Reassembly

Thoroughly clean and inspect the splines on the rear wheel and in the final drive casing.

Apply Moly 60 paste to all spline surfaces.

Apply a light coating of general-purpose grease to axle surface.

Slide axle partly into final drive casing.

Align rear wheel and slide axle into rear wheel, but not all the way through.

Insert the rear wheel into the final drive casing.

Install the rear brake caliper.

Install the rear axle through the final drive casing, wheel hub, collar, caliper bracket and swingarm.

If the caliper stopper bolt is in good condition, clean the threads and apply threadlock. Otherwise, replace it.

Install the caliper stopper bolt. 14 mm socket, torque to 69 N-m (51 lb-ft)

Install the axle nut and washer. 27 mm (or 1 1/16 in) socket and 8mm hex head, torque to 108 N-m (80 lb-ft)

Pump the rear brake lever several times.

Swing right muffler into place and install muffler mounting bolts.

Tighten the muffler mounting bolts. 12 mm socket & 10mm socket, no torque value specified.

Tighten two muffler clamp bolts (two per side), 12 mm socket, torque to 22 N-m (16 lb-ft)

Install rear fender flap. 5mm hex wrench, no torque value specified.

Post-Service Checkout

Verify that the wheel spins freely.

Verify that the rear brake does not drag.
