You are correct to wash your gloves. The fact is that you should be more concerned with the inside than the outside. Over time the build up residue of sweat (salts, oils and acids) will shorten the life of leather.

I suggest the following:

Working with a water hose and a bucket (outside), rinse the inside of the gloves thoroughly, now wash the inside of the gloves with normal liquid hand washing soap. Soap up your hands or dilute a small amount of soap in a small cup with water, wash the inside of the gloves with soap, working the inside surfaces of the gloves with your hands. The outside of the gloves may also be washed at the same time. Rinse out the gloves removing all soap residue. Do wring out or twist the gloves as it may distort the shape. Use a small dry wash cloth, folded in half, place inside of the gloves and squeeze or press more water out of the padding. Allow the gloves to dry slowly, lay them out in the garage with a fan blowing across them. Do not put in direct sun or in a hot clothes dryer. It may take several days for the gloves to dry completely. Apply a good quality leather conditioner and work into the leather.
